Yes, read your competitor's works, especially in the genre you wish to write in. Why? Same reason one does not go on a mission to become a film director without ever having seen a movie, that's why!
Now, if your local library-Walmart-big box store-Amazon ain't doing it for ya, consider a book subscription service. They send you a monthly book subscription box!
